More information on the program

You want to be part of an artist collective for 7-8 months? You want to co-create an art work with an artist you don’t know yet and have all your production costs paid as well as receive an artist fee? You want to meet more people in the Viennese art sector and broaden your network?

Once a year we publish an open call inviting artists of all disciplines to apply to work with us. Out of all of the applications we choose 14-16 artists that our jury finds especially interesting. The selected artists are divided in groups of two or three people with which they will be co-creating an artwork. Our focus is on bringing together people who work in different disciplines and have a different perspective on Vienna’s art sector and its inclusivity. In most cases that means that we pair an artist who only recently arrived in Vienna as a migrant or refugee with an artist who has already been living in Vienna for a long time. The groups have several months time to produce artworks together that are then exhibited in a suitable gallery space in Vienna.

While the artists primarily work with their group of two to three artists, different events are organized for the entire collective to get to know each other better. The events can include guided tours in museums, studio visits and talks with important actors inside the Viennese cultural sector. Here you will find events we’ve organized for past artist collectives. All open calls are announced on this page on the beginning of each year.

Read what past participants had to say about the programme below:

“[…] Having the opportunity to collaborate with Veronika Dirnhofer, an established artist, changed my perception of mentorship and deepened my understanding of its importance. The project enhanced my artistic approach and prompted self-reflection on my practice, contributing to everything that happened in my career afterward. I am forever grateful to QMA for opening up the Viennese art community to me and providing such professional individual support.” - Margarita Keller

“What QMA offers is exactly what a migrant artist needs when finding their footing in a new country - to meet people of similar interests and backgrounds, and to learn the ins and outs of local cultural life. The program is conducted with great care and support. I feel like I know half of Vienna now! If QMA didn't exist already, it would be necessary to invent it.” - Finn (Kweerkat)

“The program's curriculum at QMA provided valuable theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The diverse range of people working in different fields allowed me to explore various artistic mediums and techniques, broadening my artistic horizons. Additionally, the guidance from renowned curator members offered invaluable insights into Vienna scene and its contemporary practices.“ - Miloš Vučićević
